We are a team of Ecologists located in East Cheshire. We work across the UK undertaking ecological survey work, producing detailed technical reports and providing specialist advice in relation to ecological issues.

Our services include protected and notable species survey, licencing and mitigation; habitat and vegetative surveys, habitat creation schemes and habitat management.

We aim to find cost effective and pragmatic solutions within the legal framework whilst enabling wildlife to flourish.

  • NLG provides a consistently high level of client-focussed ecology services to Network Rail infrastructure projects. NLG is a preferred supplier given it has demonstrated an ability to consider and incorporate challenging client milestones whilst simultaneously complying with legal requirements and consulting and negotiating effectively with Natural England. NLG has a solution-based philosophy but will always guide the client clearly on legal requirements. All required fieldwork is completed diligently and report writing is clear with any ecology licence requirements completed and licences acquired in good time.

Neil Lee-Gallon

Principal Ecological and Managing Director

Neil established NLG Ecology in 2008 and has over 20 years working experience within the field of Ecology and Countryside Management. He has experience of working in both the public and private sectors, including project management of large infrastructure and utility projects from design through construction, medium and small scale schemes, habitat management and habitat creation. Neil specialises in habitat, vegetative, protected and notable faunal species ecology and mitigation; holds and has held survey and mitigation licences for a range of protected species including bats, great crested newt, white clawed crayfish, otter, water vole, sand lizard, natterjack toad and barn owl.

This experience as a professional ecologist is enhanced through previous roles as a Countryside Ranger resulting in a pragmatic and practical approach to ecology and nature conservation. Neil has worked throughout the UK, for the United States Forest Service and the Department of Conservation, New Zealand.

Neil is a Chartered Environmentalist and full member of CIEEM, holds IWA and PTS for rail competence, a CSCS card and is a NPTC qualified tree climber. He also holds a low impact GCN licence.

Marcella Lee-Gallon

Office Manager

Marcella has over ten years’ experience working in senior administration roles in a variety of sectors including academia and event management. Her extensive organisational and HR skills are an asset to our expanding business. More recently she was a high school teacher and her teaching expertise is used to enhance our in-house training programmes.

Marcella co-ordinates survey work and logistics. She ensures employees’ competences and accreditation meet all regulatory requirements, particularly as Sentinel Co-ordinator for our Network Rail work. Marcella’s role includes co-ordinating our Risk Assessment and Method Statement and our Health and Safety procedures.

Additionally, she takes the lead as Financial Co-ordinator.

Helen Staton

Ecologist

Helen is an experienced all-round ecologist that has also developed a specialism in bat ecology and mitigation licencing. She takes a lead role in project management, with an ability to design, deliver and manage individual species surveys and see them through to mitigation. Since joining NLG Ecology Ltd in 2014 Helen has actively engaged in promoting a wider skill base to include reporting of Biodiversity offsetting and taking a leading with badger bait marking study to help inform Environmental Impact Assessments.

Helen holds a level 1 bat and great crested newt survey licence, is an associate member of the CIEEEM and holds a valid CSCS and PTS card for working on construction and railway sites respectively. This work encompasses both surveys and the role on an ecological clerk of works.

Kelly MacGillivray

Ecologist

Kelly is an experienced ecologist that has specialisms in survey and mitigation particularly of bats and GCN. She joined NLG Ecology in early 2016 bringing her experience of project management and sound ecological knowledge and skill base. Kelly has experience of a range of protected species including amphibians, badgers and invertebrates, in addition to Phase 1 Habitat surveying.

Kelly holds a Class 2 bat and great crested newt survey licences and holds several bat mitigation licences.  She is an associate member of CIEEM, holds valid CSCS/BALI accreditation for surveying on construction sites, and has achieved PTS accreditation for rail work.

Sophie Warnock

Assistant Ecologist

Sophie joined NLG Ecology Ltd in 2015 to assist with ecological surveys, reporting and site based ecological clerk of works. She has a Masters in Conservation Biology from Manchester Metropolitan and volunteers for the Cheshire and South Lancashire bat group, having attended courses with these respective organisations to increase her skill base.

At NLG Ecology Ltd, Sophie leads field surveys, analysis and processing of data and reporting. She has gained a Natural England bat licence (Class 1) and is working towards her Level 2 bat licence and great crested newt licence.  Sophie has gained exposure to field survey and site implementation of protected species licenses including writing Natural England mitigation licences. Sophie holds a graduate membership to CIEEM, she holds a PTS rail accreditation for rail work., water treatment hygiene accreditation and CSCS/BALI accreditation for surveying on construction sites.

Eve Loxham

Assistant Ecologist

Eve joined NLG Ecology Ltd in 2016 to assist with ecological surveys, reporting and site based ecological clerk of works. She has a Masters in Zoology from University of Liverpool, whilst there she volunteered as a bat surveyor whilst undertaking a beekeeping course, and also worked with the Woodland Trust.

At NLG Ecology Ltd, Eve assists in field surveys, analysis and processing of data and reporting. She is gained her Natural England bat licence (Class 1) and great crested newt survey licences.  Eve has experience of water vole, moth and butterfly and crayfish surveys.  Eve holds a graduate membership to CIEEM and CSCS/BALI accreditation for surveying on construction sites and has achieved PTS accreditation for rail work.

Catrin Watkin

Assistant Ecologist

Catrin joined NLG Ecology Ltd in 2018 to assist with ecological surveys, reporting and site based ecological clerk of works. She has a Masters in Conservation and Resource Management along with a BSc(Hons) Zoology from University of Liverpool, and has worked with several nature conservation groups and volunteer posts.

At NLG Ecology Ltd, Catrin assists in field surveys, analysis and processing of data and reporting. She is working towards her Natural England bat licence (Class 1) using her previous surveying experience, and membership to CIEEM. Catrin holds National Water Hygiene and CSCS accreditation for surveying on water treatment sites and construction sites respectively.

Liam Fullard

Undergraduate Student Placement

Liam Fullard is our current Manchester Metropolitan University placement student. His main duties include working as a Clerk of Works in Trafford, assisting with ecological surveys and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) mapping. He is currently working towards gaining a BSc in Environmental Science from Manchester Metropolitan University. He has gained his CSCS accreditation. Liam enjoys cycling and has gained experience working with the scout organisation. He hopes to continue to work in an ecological consultancy when he successfully completes his course.

Megan Williams

Graduate Ecologist

Megan joined NLG Ecology Ltd in 2017 to assist with ecological surveys, reporting and site based ecological clerk of works. She has gained a Masters in Ecology and Environmental Biology  from the University of Leeds.

At NLG Ecology Ltd, Megan assists in field surveys, analysis and processing of data and reporting. She is currently gaining experience towards attainment her bat and great crested newt survey licences, she is acquiring further exposure to protected species and field survey and site implementation of protected species licenses. Megan is in the process of gaining graduate membership to CIEEM and CSCS/BALI accreditation.
